Yes, it did take 5 years for Billie to trust her caregivers..... elephants don't forget !
This is a huge step forward for Billie.
I am thrilled for her And for Liz and Freida.
They are such loyal friends.Once we found out that Liz and Queen ended up in Tennesse, it was natural for many of us to see how they were doing and to help support them. They were part of our Hudson Community for many years.
Circus and Zoo life takes it's toll on it's residents.
Many of the animals arrive at sanctuary's with signs of physical and emotional abuse. It can take years to undo the scars from abuse, just like in humans.
I am in awe of the effort put forth by the many sanctuary's in our country and throughout the world that do their best to give elephants and other animals freedom, with the chance to live out life as the beautiful creatures they are.
Just got back from my first visit to Benson's in 2011...major improvements are awesome. I spent much time last year biking and hiking at Bensons and will continue to bring the family to enjoy the beauty and wild life.
Good job folks.
It took them 5 years just to get a chain off an elephants leg? They are proud of this? Good grief! After you are done typing in Cole Bros. on the internet do the same on the Tenn. elephant sanctuary. Among other things check out the death of employee Joanna Burke. She was killed by a known bad former zoo elephant named Winkie that had hurt people before. I met her father. He said neither she or the person working with her had an elephant hook and the sanctuary did not believe in them. She was working defenseless with a bad elephant and paid the ultimate price for the sanctuary's foolish policy.
Also check out how 8 of their employees came down with TB from guess which elephant. Check out the lawsuits back and forth between founder Carol Buckley and the board of directors. Want a behind the scenes tour of the facility? It costs at least 2 grand. No kidding, check it out. What a place!!!!!!
Also why is it that when a Ringling owned elephant that was allowed to go swimming drowned it was animal abuse but one that drowned at a sanctuary was an accident?
I think sanctuaries are a good idea. Just be careful which one you donate your hard earned $ to. Check out Riddle's elephant sanctuary in Arkansas.

The last link to her past of circus life is gone !

Type in Cole Brothers Circus on the internet to find many articles about them. It is absurb that you are bringing them to town !
Kudos to you, Mr Records!!!!
Eric: Sorry you won't be able to make the reunion, It would of been nice to see you. Please thank your son for us for serving our country and welcome him home.
Cindy: Thanks for the update. I won't be able to make the reunion as I've got a son getting out of Marine boot camp on the same day so will be in SC. Maybe some of the old crew from the early 80's can meet up later in the Fall?

In it's hay day Bensons was the place to see many wonderful wild animals. My mother came from the city as a child in the 30's and she remembers donkey's walking around with baskets of flowers on their backs.
Thankfully our country's big zoo's replaced small cages with natural habitats for it's residents And though it doesn't replace life in the wild, it provides some freedom.
The last owners and crew of Benson's were trying to accomplish that, but time and money ran out.
After many long years of circus life with Hawthorne , Bensons dear elephants Liz and Queen found sanctuary in Tennesse. This was a court ordered decision.
Thanks to The Friends of Benson for all they are doing to make a beautiful park but promoting the Big Top just doesn't seem right in this day and age.
We hope to see everyone at the Benson Park Clean-Up Day this Saturday the 14th 09:00-2pn. Check-in is at the old Elephant Barn. Water and lunch are provided, please bring any landscaping tools you may have to help.

Hey Tony. Get a grip on reality. Benson's was at one time a major supplier of animals to circuses. Throughout it's history it featured circus trainers presenting elephants, lions, tigers, leapords, jaguars, pumas, polar bears, black bears, brownbears,Himalayanbears, chimps, monkies, seals, horses, ponies, parrots, macaws, cockatoos, llamas, camels and no doubt others. Rides were sold on elephants, camels, ponies and animal drawn carts. I saw a photo of a blackbuck antelope pulling a cart with kids in it.They had chickens, goats, monkies and other animals dressed in human cloths.
That my freind is Benson's heritage. That is what kept people coming to the "Strangest Farm on Earth" for many generations. As the years progressed so did training methods and concern for the well being of the animals. That is the place at many people want to remember. If that is offensive then why don't you go find some other patch of woods in N.H. to be interested in.

Shame on anyone that would support a traveling circus !Imagine living in and out of a trailer your whole
life, performing for demanding humans.
Come on Friends of Bensons... is this really the best you can do to raise money ?
Why not have a huge flea market, rent a few amusment rides, run some raffles, play some old fashion games.
Certainly it would be more fun
and a much kinder way to raise funds !
This is a horrible, unkind embarassment to the town.
We would like to thank all the people and companies that have helped us create Serenity Gardens at Bensons park. Our family's goal was to create a place that people could visit and enjoy the peacefull surroundings. Without the effort of our community none of this would have been possible. Thank you so much. George,Christine and Evan Boyer
There will be no circus at Benson Park, the circus is being sponsored by the Friends of Benson Park, their plan is to hold it at the Hill's house grounds on Rte 102. The Friends are a private organization. As to the question about the castle, there was a castle, which was the entrance to story book hill. It was not something that could be entered into. The cement bases are still in place on either side of the stairs.
Walking around I found a dump pile with pieces of what looked like an old castle with figurines. Did there used to be a big castle?

I was just reading about the Chesnut Trees and thinking that maybe my ill feelings about the place were unfounded.
Maybe this is a good place. Now I read there may be a circus there.
Have we not learned anything over the years??
Cherish our animals in sanctuay's, not poorely run zoo's and certainly not in a traveling circus !!!!!!
Please don't do this !!!!!!
